Battlefield 3's lead designer, David Goldfarb, left DICE last month, but it looks like he'll be staying in Sweden after all. He announced that he has joined forces with developer Overkill Software (owned by Starbreeze). His first project? He will be working side-by-side with project lead Ulf Andersson on a sequel to Payday: The Heist.
“I’ve worked on these huge games, and that was great, but I really wanted to work on smaller, tighter, and more intimate projects that are more gameplay driven, and I saw the opportunity to do that here,” Goldfarb told Develop. “I talked to a lot of places but I felt the best fit for me was Starbreeze and Overkill because they have a really interesting history and a lot of games I really like.”
I wasn't a huge fan of Payday, but I know many people liked how unique the premise was for a co-op first-person shooter. It will truly be interesting to see how Goldfarb, who has helped design the massive levels in Battlefield 3, will transpose some of that grander scale down to Payday. I bet those masks are still creepy as hell.
