Can't we all just get along? The battle between console manufacturers has played a major role in the industry for as long as video games have been around. However, with the dawn of timed exclusives, downloadable content and vastly diverging strategies, keeping up with all three of the major players has become a chore.
Tekken design director, Harada San spoke to the possibility of a single console future, sharing the belief that if Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo were to work together and create a single, unified platform, we'd see new levels of innovation within the video game space. “I think it would be interesting if Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo got together just to make one console. It makes me very happy to think about all the possibilities that could occur because of that,” he said.
Wait, but I thought competition helps spur innovation… Wouldn't the merge of these three negate that? According to Harada San the surge of gaming on other platforms like mobile phones is competition enough. “People are able to not be tied down by consoles," he added. "And it doesn’t stop with phones, we have browser gaming and all these different platforms.”
