Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is only days from releasing, and Valve is already planning to reinforce it with the power of mods and the adrenaline of bloodthirsty zombies.
Valve has announced that in collaboration with the community over at Plaguefest.com, a new package titled Zombie Mod has been developed for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. While it's exclusive to the PC version, it'll be available for free from day one, and will be further expanded with a variety of game modes through post-release patches.
Valve is very serious about backing their upcoming shooter with mod support, and posted the following on the official Counter-Strike Blog:
It was important to us as we developed CS:GO to make sure it was as moddable and extensible as any CS game. So this is just one of many mods that will be available to CS:GO in the coming months.
If you look back to Counter-Strike: Source and especially Counter-Strike 1.6 you'll find a wide variety of mods that gave it legs. Gun Game comes to mind, which was so popular it was later adopted into the Call of Duty franchise. You'll also find some wild but extremely fun idea such as kz jumping, surfing—which I spent upward of 200 hours perfecting—, and a slew of custom maps such as de_haunts, which emulated The Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland, and of course the fan favorite fy_iceworld.
Even if Counter-Strike: Global Offensive doesn't become the next big competitive game that Valve wants it to be at least it'll be fun to play, whether it be through saving hostages or eating them as a zombie, and sometimes that's all a game needs to be considered successful.
