Automaton Games has released a new teaser trailer for its upcoming 400-player battle royale game, Mavericks Proving Grounds. However, that’s only one of two major modes featured in the game.
Mavericks Proving Grounds is a massively multiplayer online survival game featuring a whopping 1000 concurrent players in a living and breathing world with a map spanning 12 kilometers. Improbable’s SpatialOS technology is a cloud-based technology which makes all that possible. This allows the game to exceed the power of a single game or server.
The full game, which is set to be released in 2019, will feature destruction, roaming wildlife, dynamic weather, foliage displacement, tracks, blood trails, fire, and water. It will also include character progression, social hubs, and a “global-scale player-driven narrative.”
The first playable mode, which is the 400-player battle royale mode, will be releasing earlier than the full game, with a slated release window of Spring 2018. Although the teaser trailer below doesn’t show any gameplay, the visuals certainly look better than most battle royale games currently available out there. We can see a glimpse of somebody running through the forest, with the sounds of gunfire and explosions in the background.
A closed beta for Mavericks Proving Grounds is coming but no specific dates have been announced. The next major announcement for the game will be revealed at the upcoming Games Developers Conference in March. The battle royale genre has been taking the world by storm since PUBG released in 2017. Impressively, PUBG alone has sold over 30 million units even though its active players have been declining.
Automaton Games was founded in 2015 and based in the UK. Its primary goal is to push the boundaries of massively multiplayer online experiences. Improbable is the creator of the Spatial OS game development platform, which makes Mavericks Proving Grounds possible. It was founded in 2012 and grown to over 200 employees, with offices in London, Washington D.C. and San Francisco.
