A remastered Spyro Trilogy is reportedly coming to the PS4 this year, with the team behind the bank-rolling Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy said to be behind the project.
According to a Kotaku report, “multiple sources” have claimed that a Spyro the Dragon Trilogy Remaster is on its way, with Vicarious Visions taking the helm. These sources have suggested that the collection will “feature new assets, lighting, animations and cinematics, as well as a remastered soundtrack.”
Much like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, the Spyro Trilogy is said to contain the first three entries in the old Insomniac Games series: Spyro the Dragon, Ripto’s Rage!, and Year of the Dragon. The game is reportedly set to be released in Q3 2018 following a March 2018 announcement and will feature PS4 Pro support.
Activision, the publisher behind the N. Sane Trilogy, also owns the rights to Spyro so another remastered trilogy is well within reason. Though Spyro didn’t have the same impact on the industry as Crash Bandicoot, it was still a popular mascot that many want to see revived in the near future. The success of the N. Sane Trilogy could dictate that this will be the case.
Many had hoped that Vicarious Visions would be working on a brand new Crash Bandicoot game, though if the rumors of the Spyro Trilogy are true, then it seems unlikely that we’ll get a sequel in the near future. The Kotaku report also noted that the trilogy could be tied to a one-year exclusivity deal, adding that Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is tied to a similar deal. If this is the case then it ties into a previous rumor that Switch and PC versions of the collection are on their way.
This earlier rumor also suggested that a new Crash Bandicoot game would be released in 2019, which would give Vicarious Visions time to release the Spyro Trilogy. However, this could be too much of a swift turnaround for the dev team for both rumors to be true.
