Sony has a history of preserving the life of its consoles – for better or worse – long after they've been rendered obsolete by new hardware. We saw it with the PS2 and we're seeing it now in Japan with the PSP. If rumor proves true and the next PlayStation launches in 2013, then it looks like Sony's sticking to a similar strategy yet again with the PS3, as Sony's VP of hardware marketing John Koller has made it clear that they have no plans to drop support for their current console any time soon.
Speaking with GameSpot, Koller explained that Sony still has plenty of high quality first-party content planned for the PS3 over the next few years. "A lot of great content is coming, and over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup," he said.
"We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we're going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming."
Does this mean we'll see inFAMOUS 3 or, dare I say, another Uncharted on the PlayStation 3? It certainly is a possibility, but one would think Naughty Dog might want to save their next big project for the PS4's launch. Perhaps Koller's alluding to the fact that The Last Guardian won't launch until 2015. Now that I can get behind.
