Total War Saga Thrones of Britannia will be the first Total War game to be released under the new Saga banner. The game’s director Jack Lusted has recently revealed several details regarding the upcoming game. In an AMA thread on Reddit, Lusted answered the questions posted there about the game. First of all, his team is completely focused on the game’s release, so no DLC is in the works as of yet. There will be a strong emphasis on kings and generals in Thrones of Britannia, even more so than previous Total War games due to the role they play during the era featured in the game.
When asked about the new UI for Thrones of Britannia, Lusted confirmed that the background color is black wood and that the general theme of the game includes blue and green. He also said that there will be two stages to the victory conditions for all factions. For example, the West Seaxe faction will be renamed Anglo-Saxons when the short victory conditions are achieved and then renamed England later when the long victory conditions have been reached.
Additionally, Lusted explains that one of the main challenges when developing Thrones of Britannia was making sure that there are “as many differences as possible between the different factions/cultures on the map.” However, he adds that the advantage of that is it keeps the game focused to add more details, with “clearly-defined boundaries to work with.”
To further emphasize generals and kings, some of the bonuses that previously came with agents has been transferred to them while some bonuses will be tied to certain buildings. For example, the Garrison chain reduces enemy movement distance in that particular province by fifty percent, giving players more time to deal with invading armies. Losing a leader will definitely hurt more now.
Several differences between Total War Attila and Thrones of Britannia includes new unit parts, texture changes, changes to vegetation and grass, changing the lighting to fit with the feel of the game as well as brand new building models and landmarks in the campaign. However, Creative Assembly still used Attila as a base for Thrones of Britannia, which means that some assets will be shared.
Another huge change from previous Total War games is the new approach to recruiting units for armies and fleets. Units will not be tied to certain military buildings anymore, as the new system helps “promote a mixed approach to recruitment.” Religion will not be a major mechanic in gameplay like it was in Attila since most of the factions in Thrones of Britannia will be mostly Christian. Every faction will start the game with settlements, with no horde system.
