Nintendo has confirmed that it will be hosting tournaments for Super Smash Bros and Splatoon 2 on the Nintendo Switch at E3 2018. Both tournaments will have different formats. The Super Smash Bros tournament will be an invitational, which means that a certain number of players will be invited by Nintendo to participate. Nintendo Senior Product Marketing Manager Bill Trinen said that it will emulate the structure of E3 2014’s Super Smash Bros invitational tourney, which featured big players who played the unreleased version of the game on the Wii U back then.
The Splatoon 2 tournament, titled the Splatoon 2 World Championship, will be the first truly global tournament featuring the game. Four top teams from multiple regions including Europe, Japan, Australia and the United States/Canada, will be participating in the event.
Before the arrival of the Splatoon 2 World Championship, there will be several qualifiers taking place on April 21st, 2018 for the US/Canada region. The finals will be held on April 28th, where advancing teams will compete in Turf War during the open qualifiers and Ranked Battle modes.
The Super Smash Bros game for the Switch has yet to be released, with no confirmed release date. It was officially announced during the Nintendo Direct presentation earlier this month. Little was revealed about the game, other than that it will introduce new characters into its already-impressive roster with the only confirmed new fighters so far being the Inklings from Splatoon 2.
Nintendo America Sales and Marketing Senior Vice President Doug Bowser said: “Nintendo always takes an original approach to video game competitions, and the portability of Nintendo Switch enables unique gameplay possibilities. We’re looking forward to watching some of the best players in the world test their skills against each other in these two uniquely competitive games.”
E3 2018 will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 12 to June 14, 2018. This year’s expo will be open to the public for a second consecutive year. More details for Nintendo’s E3 plans will be announced in the months and weeks leading to the main event.
