Super Mario Odyssey Baseball Uniform and Satellaview Suit

Super Mario Odyssey Gets New Satellaview and Baseball Costumes

Nintendo is releasing an update to Super Mario Odyssey that adds two new costumes to the game. The Baseball Uniform and Satellaview Suit will join the plethora of other costume options for Mario and will be available in Crazy Cap stores everywhere. Once your copy of Super Mario Odyssey has been updated, it will be as easy as heading to the store paying a few coins for them.

Mario’s in-game costumes typically reference either a level in-game or his past, and these are no different. The Baseball uniform and batting helmet are likely references to the Mario Baseball series and/or Nintendo’s prior partial ownership of the Seattle Mariners. The Satellaview suit and helmet are a little more complex, especially if you’re a gamer outside of Japan.

Mario in the Satellaview Suit was used in the marketing of Nintendo’s Satellaview. The Satellaview was an add-on peripheral for the Super Famicom (SNES in the West) made in partnership with St. GIGA. The device was released in Japan only, and allowed owners to receive digital broadcasts at certain times of the day.

The Satellaview’s broadcasts brought all sorts of neat programming to Super Famicom players that no one outside of Japan ever got a chance to see. This included audio dramas overlaid on top of specially modified versions of existing hits like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. These Satellaview versions had cutscenes added and a streaming vocal track.

The Satellaview service lasted from 1995 until 2000 after which St. GIGA ceased broadcasting. For Nintendo to dig so far into their history is astounding, and it’s even more shocking that they’re sharing it with a worldwide audience. You can see Mario in his Satellaview Suit in the Japanese television commercial below. Here’s hoping to more obscure outfits for Mario in Super Mario Odyssey soon.
