Kittens are fluffy, innocent little creatures that occasionally scratch your furniture, and one thing you never should do is threaten their well-being. That is, unless you want the entire internet to hate you—especially Reddit. Well, one developer didn't get that memo.
Reverb Publishing's brilliant marketing team sent out a press release earlier today that stated it would charitably donate $5000 to the Humane Society if its latest game, Edge of Space, was approved by Steam for Greenlight support before October 15th. That might not sound too offensive, but just look at how it was worded:
If Edge of Space is approved by October 15, 2012 through Greenlight, Reverb Publishing will donate $5000 to the Humane Society, which will go towards providing necessary care and safety to homeless cats. However, if the game doesn't get approval, that money will disappear, like a puff of smoke in the uncaring wind, leaving poor kitties to survive in the harsh elements, be placed in harm's way and possibly scheduled for euthanasia. The challenge is out there, and for a simple "yes" vote on Steam's Greenlight consumers can actively take a role in saving the lives of kitties. So, do your part, save some cats, and see a great space sandbox adventure get onto Steam's platform. It's a win-win!
Whoa… no you didn't.
Actually, yes they did. The message above was sent to dozens of outlets in an attempt to bring some attention to the Kickstarter-backed game. Well, it certainly got what it bargained for as within hours the Steam community shared some choice words on Edge of Space's Steam Community page. Serves you right for threatening kittens!
Oh, and in case you're wondering, the publisher has already sent out an apology and the $5000 have been donated thus saving the precious kittens.
This is the part where I would normally tell you information about the game I've discussed above but in this case I'm just going to scratch that idea… if you know what I mean. Instead, I'm going to go check to make sure my kittens haven't been taken hostage.
