Overwatch Retribution Glitch Makes Event Characters Playable

Overwatch’s Retribution event has been going strong ever since it released last Tuesday, April 10th. Not only has it been awesome to play, but it has allowed players a chance to look into the story behind Overwatch which, admittedly, the game is rather sparse on. The event also added a lot of diverse AI-controlled enemies, such as the Assassin, Sniper and the Heavy, (also known as Big Boy to a few on Twitter).  These enemies are supposed to stay just in the arcade mode, however, some sly fans have had a few things to say about that restriction…

We discovered that some players have been able to take advantage of a groundbreaking glitch, abusing the system by somehow playing these AI-controlled enemies in game modes like Quick Play and even 6v6 Competitive. First seen on YouTube and Twitch (via Reddit), this glitch seems to have only been found in Korean versions of Overwatch, yet that hasn’t stopped other players from trying to exploit it.

Humorously enough, it isn’t just the Retribution event that hackers are bringing characters from. There have been instances where players have returned from the character selection screen as Uprising’s Null Sector bots and, strangely enough, sometimes as Junkrat’s RIP tire. In the clip below you will be able to see a 6v6 competitive match that seems as though it’s going well, right until the team finds out who they’re playing against…

Imagine you’re having a good time and this big boy comes along. Consider your day officially ruined, right? In hindsight, hackers using this glitch can be a serious pain for those playing against them, particularly the Heavy Assault trooper. As you can see above, even with the whole team trying to destroy it the damage it takes is terribly insignificant, making what should have been a good time something of a frustrating activity for all involved.

A recent update from Blizzard (via Polygon) confirmed that the developers have already issued a hotfix for this bug.
