The Witcher Netflix TV Show Will Have Eight Episodes, Might Release in 2020

More information regarding the upcoming The Witcher Netflix show has been revealed. Fresh from recently attending a Netflix event in Rome, TV writer Lauren S. Hissrich tweeted all the juicy details on the upcoming TV show, including the confirmed number of episodes, when to expect the TV show and where it will be filmed.

On her Twitter account, Hissrich revealed that Netflix’s The Witcher TV show will be eight episodes long. She wrote that with only eight episodes to produce for the first season, it will be “tight, action-packed, rich in character and story, without lagging in the middle of the season.”

As for the expected release date, she tweeted that it might be as soon as 2020. However, it might be too early to get our hopes up, since she also tweeted that the script for the episodes needs to be polished and actually written before they can be produced. As we reported back in February, she reiterates that the pilot episode has been completed. However, the remaining seven episodes have not been written. The good news is that Netflix will be hiring new writers to help speed up the process.

Last but not least, she also revealed that Netflix’s The Witcher TV show will be shot in a location which would stay true to the roots of the novels. It will be shot in Eastern Europe, which means there’s a possibility that it could be shooting near or even in Sapkowski’s home country, Poland.

Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation was originally announced in May 2017. The synopsis on Netflix describes the TV show as being about “mutated monster hunter/witcher Geralt struggling to find his place in a world where people are often crueler than beasts.” It will be based on the original book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, who will also serve as creative consultant for the show. It will not be based on the CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher games, as the story in the games technically takes place after the events of the books.
