Take-Two Delays Big Mystery Title, Announces GTAV Shipped 95 Million Copies

Take-Two Interactive announced today in a financial conference call that it has delayed a mystery game in one of their big franchises. In addition to that vague news, they also announced a few of Grand Theft Auto 5‘s many successes, including shipping over 95 million copies.

Take-Two stated that a “highly-anticipated title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises, which had been planned for release during the current fiscal year, is now planned for launch during fiscal 2020 to allow for additional development time.” Keep in mind that the fiscal year 2020 spans from April 2019 to March 2020. This means the game was scheduled to come out by April 2019 but is now proposed to release before March 2020.

They did not reveal what the delayed game was but there are clues that can help narrow down the suspects. The two biggest possible titles are Borderlands 3 and that not-quite-announced BioShock game. Both are huge series for Take-Two that reportedly have heavily rumored installments currently in development.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has been pretty open about Borderlands 3‘s existence but shut down speculation of it coming to E3 by saying that it would not appear at the show next month. This would also appear to muddy the waters on Walmart Canada’s supposed big E3 leak where Borderlands 3 was listed. Rage 2 was real, after all, but that does not prove that they all exist.

BioShock is the other big franchise of interest. Unnamed employees from Hangar 13, Mafia 3‘s developer, stated that a top-secret BioShock was being developed right next to their studio. If the rest of these rumblings are correct, that game is still pretty early and has only been in development for a few months. However, that earliness makes it harder to believe it would come out sooner rather than later.

A decent portion of the rest of the report was dedicated to Grand Theft Auto 5‘s continued achievements. The game has shipped over 95 million copies as of March 31st almost five years after its initial release. Take-Two announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 sold 90 million just in February 2018. Grand Theft Auto Online was unsurprisingly very successful too, saying it yielded “better-than-expected results.” NBA 2K18 also did well for them, selling 9 million units and becoming their “highest-selling sports title ever.”
