Borderlands XCOM 2 BioShock Switch cartridges

Borderlands, XCOM 2, and BioShock Switch releases won’t have the full games

Earlier today, a surprise Nintendo Direct mini announced that the Borderlands, XCOM 2and BioShock Switch releases. What wasn’t announced was that these games will all be missing something: a good chunk of the game data won’t be included on the cartridges.

No mention of this fault was included in the Nintendo Direct or its subsequent press release. The Amazon store listings for these games also do not yet mention the missing game data at the time of writing.

The bad news arrived via a supplemental press release which detailed the specific issues. Here’s the details on each of the three collections coming to the Nintendo Switch soon:

The [BioShock Switch] physical game contains an 16GB cartridge including the opening acts of BioShock Remastered, BioShock 2 Remastered, and BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition. Later game contents and add-ons will need to be downloaded.

The [Borderlands Switch] physical game contains an 8GB cartridge that features Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, with a 6.6GB download required. For Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel a 35GB download is required.

The [XCOM 2 Switch] physical game contains an 8GB cartridge that features two base game missions. A download is required for the rest of the Total download size will not exceed 24GB.

Physical games requiring downloads is nothing new; after all, we’re all well familiar with day-one patches. However, the level of missing content here seems particularly egregious.

Although these games use 8GB or 16GB cartridges, that wouldn’t have been much of a factor — even a 32GB cartridge would not have been enough to cover all of the games. (Nintendo does not yet manufacture 64GB cartridges.)

One other uncertainty is whether or not this will apply to the recently-announced Burnout Paradise Remastered which is also coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. If you plan on getting any of these games, it’s probably best to free up a good chunk of storage space in advance.
