Sony had a killer April and that’s because of a certain godly being. The April NPD showed a big month for Sony as the PS4 had its best April in its lifetime. Thanks to God of War, Sony had the biggest April ever for both hardware and software. Overall sales for hardware, software, and accessories also increased over last April and Ubisoft continued its hot streak.
Sony
The NPD Group shows that software and hardware contributed to Sony’s huge month. The PS4’s sales were the best in any April, topping the Wii’s record set in 2009. Software dollar sales were the highest in any April, beating the Xbox 360 in 2008. Grand Theft Auto 4 came out in April 2008, which was the catalyst for the previous milestone.
God of War, the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive, was also the best-selling title of the month and greatly contributed to Sony’s record-breaking April. It had the biggest launch month dollar sales for a PlayStation exclusive. The game has also been consistently topping the charts over in the UK.
MLB 18: The Show also had a good month, showing up at number three in software sales and only trailing God of War as the best-selling exclusive of the year. Both helped make Sony’s software dollar sales the best in any April ever since the NPD starting tracking the stat in 1995. The Limited Edition God of War PS4 Pro was also the month’s best-selling hardware item in dollar sales. This bundle not only gave PS4 sales a boost but also specifically the PS4 Pro.
Ubisoft
The April NPD was kind to Ubisoft too. They remain the year’s top revenue-generating publisher, thanks to year’s best-selling game, Far Cry 5, and the continued success of Rainbow 6: Siege and Ghost Recon: Wildlands.
Nintendo
The Switch gave Nintendo a big month too. The 32 GB Switch was the month’s best-selling hardware in units (as opposed to dollar sales). As for software, the Nintendo Labo Variety Kit debuted at number four and the Robot Kit was 21st on the list. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Kirby Star Allies all showed up on top 20 chart, giving Nintendo the most amount of titles on the April NPD.
