After Sony successfully revitalized its 90s mascot last year with the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, Sega is trying to do the same for its own iconic mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic has gone through somewhat of a rough patch throughout the 2000s but the company reignited interest in the character after 2017’s well-received Sonic Mania. The blue speedster celebrates his 27th birthday in 2018 and Sega is preparing something big.
According to a report by Siliconera, Sega will be holding a special live birthday celebration event for Sonic the Hedgehog at Tokyo Joypolis on June 23rd, 2018. Series producer Takashi Iizuka will be going on stage to speak about the upcoming Sonic Mania Plus and other releases, which probably includes the recently-announced Team Sonic Racing as well.
Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Celebration: Where To Catch The Live Stream
It will be streamed live so Sonic fans will not need to go all the way to Japan to join in the celebration. The live stream will be available on both YouTube and Periscope. The links for the live stream will be announced at a later date, presumably closer to the event’s date. However, if anyone is lucky enough to attend the celebration, there will be special limited edition Sonic merchandise on sale.
More details and further information will be revealed as we get closer to June 23rd, 2018. In other related news, Paramount has just announced its first casting for its upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog Movie. James Marsden of Westworld and X-Men fame will be starring in the movie, which is slated for a November 2019 release window.
Meanwhile, the existence of Team Sonic Racing was confirmed by Sega only several days ago. The game is in development for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC with a winter release window. It will include both online multiplayer and local play, including a four-player split screen mode.
