FIFA 19 Champions League License Confirmed at E3 2018

EA has confirmed something long-rumored for its long-running FIFA franchise at EA Play during E3 2018: the Champions League license is headed to FIFA 19

During the EA Play portion of E3 2018, a gameplay trailer was complemented by a series of announcements: a career mode featuring  Champions League; The Journey’s third entry showcasing Alex Hunter’s chase for European glory, as well as the official UEFA license being a huge part of FIFA 19 as a whole. As of writing, outside of a gameplay trailer, nothing has been fully revealed about the FIFA 19 Champions League, so watch this space.

This is the first time EA has held the UEFA license since UEFA Champions League 2006/07 a whole console generation ago which, bizarrely, was also the debut of Ultimate Team. Talk about going full circle. It has been held since Konami until it lost its license in May 2018.

With EA grabbing the last of the big licenses with the Champions League (and presumably the Europa League, though that was not mentioned on-stage), it may strike a death knell for its longtime rival Pro Evolution Soccer in terms of licensing. Konami also recently lost the Borussia Dortmund license.

So, the glitz and the glamor of Europe’s premiere soccer competition is coming to FIFA 19. With EA sure to go all-in now they hold all the cards, it’s hard to see how PES can go about topping this. If nothing else, it’s shifted the soccer game dynamic further than at any point in the past decade. This is big news, and one that fans of EA’s soccer series have been clamoring for.

What are you all looking forward to with the FIFA 19 Champions League license being in EA’s hands once again? That anthem? The chance to, possibly, play as some of Europe’s lesser lights? Let us know below in the comments!
