E3 2018: Halo Infinite Announced for Xbox One

A brand-new Halo game, Halo Infinitehas been announced at Microsoft’s E3 2018 conference. Master Chief is back for the first time since Halo 5 in 2015.

In a trailer full of misdirects, the Slipspace Engine-powered game revealed its face to the world as John-117, ironically, held his helmet to the floor. Just what has he seen in the distance? And is this a continuation of the 343 Halo trilogy or another side-story a la Halo Reach? So. Many. Questions.

Either way, this is 343 looking to forge a new path for the Spartan, with the trailer also focusing on cockpits, a ground crew unleashing a smoke grenade around some mysterious Covenant architecture.

“We will join Master Chief on his greatest adventure yet to save humanity,” says Head of Xbox Phil Spencer upon the reveal of Halo Infinite.

So, what can we take from the trailer? The timeline is unclear, to put it mildly. Its focus on animals indicates an Earth-bound adventure for everyone’s favorite Spartan. In fact, there’s no hint of the narrative continuing on from Halo 5, but it’s hard to think where else Master Chief’s adventures could squeeze in the official canon.

If there’s one thing we’re certain on: the game looks beautiful.

Happy with that? Wanted something more? 343 have a lot of ground to make up and goodwill to generate when it comes to the Halo franchise but, since they’ve been given the keys by Bungie, this as close as we’ve come to grasping the ‘feel’ of a Halo experience. More of this, please, 343.
