It looks like Jason Vorhees isn’t rising from the grave anytime soon. It’s bad news for players of Friday the 13th The Game, as the game’s publisher has announced that it will not be receiving any future content due an ongoing copyright lawsuit. There’s a reason why we haven’t seen a new Friday the 13th movie since 2009. The franchise rights have been embroiled in a complex lawsuit case and now it’s affecting the game too.
Friday the 13th The Game: Jason Is Dead
The game’s publisher Gun Media recently revealed the unfortunate news in a press release. Until the lawsuit is solved (which probably isn’t anytime soon), no new content can be released for the game. That means no more alternate modes, new maps, as well as new playable Jasons and Counselors. That includes all upcoming planned content such as “Uber Jason”, The Grendel Map, Jason Kill Packs, Clothing, Emotes and new Counselors.
However, Gun Media reassures players that it remains committed to “launching dedicated servers on our console platforms and providing the continued maintenance and bug fixing important to supporting our fan base.” Let’s hope that the lawsuit is solved anytime in the near future, as the game is finally picking up steam after receiving many updates from its developer IllFonic.
Last year, we exclusively revealed that the Friday the 13th franchise lawsuit won’t be affecting Friday the 13th The Game. That was according to Robert Wyman, the lawyer for Horror, INC. Horror, INC is the production company currently holding the rights for the iconic horror franchise. The lawsuit began when Victor Miller, the writer of the original 1980 film, wanted to reclaim his rights to the IP and make more movies.
Friday the 13th The Game is available on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. It pits up to seven players in control of camp counselors against one player in control of the unstoppable Jason Vorhees. Camp counselors will need to escape the map alive, while Jason will need to kill all counselors before the time runs out.
