E3 2018: Sony Evasive on Fortnite Cross-Platform Controversy

Sony has really gone and messed up Fortnite on the Switch. Sony’s complete and utter reluctance to allow cross-platform play has stuck a big, painful thorn in what should have been a great addition to the Switch’s library. Users around the world have been unable to log in if they’ve played Fortnite on Switch or PS4. Fortnite cross-platform play is a mess and it’s entirely down to Sony.

Fortnite on the Switch allows cross-platform play with Xbox One and PC – but not PS4. Those who have made an account on PS4 have been unable to log in with the said account on Switch and vice-versa. It’s a ludicrous situation, especially considering there are no issues with such things for players with already existing Fortnite accounts on Xbox One and PC.

Sony Evasive on the Fortnite Controversy

Speaking to IGN, Reggie Fils-Aimé (president of Nintendo of America) shared his thoughts on the issue. “What competitors do is their decision to make. We believe being both developer-forward and fan-forward is in the best interest of the game”. Sony’s response was… evasive, to say the least. Speaking to the BBC, Sony didn’t explain anything.

”We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. Fortnite is already a huge hit with PS4 fans, offering a true free-to-play experience so gamers can jump in and play online. With 79 million PS4s sold around the world and more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms.”

While Sony acknowledges that it allows Fortnite cross-platform play across the likes of PC and mobile, nothing was said about Switch and Xbox One. We were looking for answers to the issue, and Sony has given us nothing at all. Hopefully, Sony can put aside its differences and allow true cross-platform play sooner, rather than later.
