Gears of War 5 E3 2018 Gears 5

Gears 5 Is the Official Title for Gears of War 5

Microsoft Studios and The Coalition are not simply trying to look cool when they refer to Gears of War 5 as Gears 5. That’s because Gears 5 is actually the official title of the upcoming next installment in the Microsoft exclusive franchise. It was initially revealed at the Microsoft Xbox press conference at E3 2018 last week.

The Coalition head Rod Fergusson recently clarified the issue of the game’s official title on Twitter. In a tweeted reply to IGN executive editor Ryan McCaffrey, Fergusson emphasizes that the name of the game will only be Gears 5 instead of the longer and more expected Gears of War 5. That will be the name appearing on the game’s physical cover art as well as officially licensed merchandise and products.

Gears 5: Why It’s Not Gears of War 5

In fact, the latter is exactly the reason why the name has been shortened to Gears 5, according to Fergusson. He explains that the name of the franchise remains Gears of War. However, due to the upcoming releases of other franchise themed products like Gears Pop and Gears Tactics, he stated in a tweet that gamers have always “called it Gears anyway so it feels good to simplify.”

As a direct sequel to Gears of War 4, players will assume the role of the female protagonist Kait in what looks to be the biggest and most dramatic game in the franchise to date. We reported last week during E3 2018 that the game will run at 60 fps in 4K HDR on the Xbox One X, and subscribers of the Xbox Game Pass will be able to play the game on launch day with no additional cost whatsoever.

Meanwhile, the other Gears title announced during E3 2018 was Gears Tactics, which is an XCOM-like strategy game for the PC. It will probably feature gameplay mechanics similar to Halo Wars. Both games do not have confirmed release dates yet, but Gears 5 will release for the Xbox One and PC sometime in 2019.
