The Fortnite cross-platform play fiasco just keeps on going, doesn’t it? Sony before announced that they didn’t really have anything to say on the matter. Now, though, after persistence from thousands of fans on social media platforms, Sony has said something altogether more hopeful on the PS4 cross-play situation.
Indeed, speaking at the Gamelab conference in Spain, Shawn Layden (president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America), alongside Mark Cerny, gave Fortnite fans some hope. The presentation delivered at Gamelab was on the legacy of PlayStation. Eurogamer threw in a question about PS4 cross-play at the end.
Fortnite Cross-Platform PS4 Play, Will it Ever Happen?
Eurogamer’s question regarding Fortnite cross-platform play was as follows:
“I thought it was fascinating you talking about PlayStation 3 flying too close to the sun – your Icarus moment you called it, and then PlayStation 4 coming back to be more back to basics, to be more about the players. But there seems to be an issue at the moment, that Sony isn’t listening to its players – or doesn’t seem to be – and that’s cross-play, Fortnite particularly. And I wondered if there were any plans to open it up? It seems to be Sony’s not listening.”
Layden argued that Sony are “hearing” the fans. He offered some kind of hope on the subject, too. Sony is looking at the “possibilities” of PS4 cross-play.
“We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
At the end of the day, if you can happily play across Switch, PC, and Xbox One, it seems ridiculous that the PS4 is not a part of the equation. Time will tell if true PS4 cross-platform play will be allowed, but for now, we must play the waiting game. You can’t play with PS4 owners, however.
