According to the NPD group, Nintendo Switch sales will be awesome this year. Indeed, NPD is predicting that the Switch will outsell the PS4 in 2018. No matter how well the Switch has been doing this year, this comes as a bit of a surprise considering that, as of writing, the PS4 has outsold the Switch thus far in 2018.
Thanks to titles such as God of War, the PS4 has had a great year. This surely stands to continue with surefire mainstream hits such as Insomniac’s Spider-Man set to release in September alongside Dragon Quest 11. Meanwhile, the Switch has seen releases such as Kirby Star Allies and Mario Tennis Aces. While both titles sell well, it’s relative compared to the huge success of God of War and the upcoming Spider-Man. Why then, does the NPD group predict that the Switch will overtake the PS4’s numbers?
Mat Piscatella (head gaming industry analyst at NPD) reckons the new Pokemon Let’s Go titles and Super Smash Bros Ultimate will propel Nintendo Switch sales to new heights around Christmas. His full thoughts on the matter are below:
“Driven by the launches of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling console of the fourth quarter in unit sales, while also elevating the platform to be the best-selling console of the year.”
It will be interesting to see whether or not Piscatella’s predictions come true. Nintendo Switch sales have been a constant surprise to just about everyone. We wouldn’t be totally shocked if the Switch ends 2018 as the best-selling console of the year. Both Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Pokemon Let’s Go should prove to be big-ticket items. Nintendo says that it has more unannounced games to release this year, too, but will announce them when the time is right.
2018 could be a big year for Nintendo, that’s for sure.
