Jonathan Blow, the creator of The Witness, has stated that the well-reviewed puzzle game is not coming to the Nintendo Switch. He added that if the project were to ever happen, he would outsource the project to an outside team. This is because his own team is far too busy with their own projects.
Blow added in an interview with Eurogamer that he “wouldn’t say never” about a port for the Nintendo Switch, but that his team “worked on [the]… game for a long time. [They] could have done more ports but [he] felt like it was a good idea to give the team a break and work on some new things.” Blow further added that his team is “working on new projects now…. [that they’re] not really working on ports of The Witness but that could change”. Additionally he said that “Something could happen. We could outsource it and quality control in-house. But we’re not currently doing anything.”
The Switch is indeed gaining a lot of traction in terms of sales so it would be quite sensible to port the game to the hybrid console. In addition to that its compartmentalized puzzle focused design would do very well for short-bursts on a portable platform. However, Blow and his team are focusing on their newest game, codenamed Sokoban, which is in its early stages of development. In the interview, Blow describes the game as being “weird. It’s a level-based game. There’s a lot of levels. We have a lot more levels than we had last year.” Additionally, the game is far enough in development that some footage was even shown of it recently at the Gamelab conference in Spain.
The Witness originally came out on PC and PS4 in January 2016, with an Xbox One port later that year.
So do you think the game would do well on the Nintendo Switch, or would it not work at all? Sound off in the comments below!
