Lords of the Fallen 2

Lords of the Fallen 2 Will Be A “Reset” And “Fresh Start,” Says Defiant Studios

It looks like Lords of the Fallen 2 will be developed from the ground up,  despite being a sequel. Defiant Studios has confirmed the news regarding the upcoming sequel to one of the more prominent Dark Souls-style action RPG games, which was originally released back in 2014. Despite being mostly overlooked for being too much like a Dark Souls clone, it sold well enough to warrant a sequel, successfully selling over two million units to date.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Defiant Studios managing director David Grijns said: “It’s really a reset, it’s a fresh start. It’s a new engine – Unreal 4 – and a new team. A team which does not have a long and illustrious background in action RPG development, but we actually see it as a strength.” However, Grijns assured players that Lords of the Fallen 2 will still be a Dark Souls-style action RPG game, albeit with brand-new ideas and a brand-new engine to boot.

What’s clear is that the game remains in very early development, which means that we won’t be seeing Lords of the Fallen 2 until at least a few years down the line. That could mean a next-gen console release if it turns out to launch around the same time-frame as the next generation of gaming consoles. Defiant Studios creative director Roland Lesterlin said: “We are still exploring concepts and trying to move between paper design and prototypes but what is very important is ensuring the game is slick and tight.”

It was initially revealed earlier in June 2018 that original Lords of the Fallen developer Deck13 Interactive would not be returning to work on the sequel. The developer is currently busy working on The Surge 2, which is slated for release sometime in 2019. Lords of the Fallen 2 will be Defiant Studios’ debut game, but the development team will be composed of veterans from Avalanche Studios, some of whom have worked on games such as Just Cause 3.
