Munchkin Is Getting a 40k Version

Along with a hilariously grimdark overhaul of the popular game Monopoly on its way to shelves this month, Warhammer 40k has once again teamed up with the developers of more traditional tabletop games to bring forth a new creation. This time, it’s Munchkin artist and 40k “fanboy” John Kovalic who gets the pleasure of bringing the Imperium of Man and the Forces of Chaos smashing together. Steve Jackson Games announced the next development in novelty 40k team-ups during its annual attendance to Gen Con this year.

Munchkin is a 3-6 player card game seeking to create a humorous experience in the dungeon-diving medium “with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff”. Essentially, the monsters, traps, and treasure are all there, but, instead of building the life and times of legendary heroes, the players are encouraged to operate under the most cut-throat attitude possible, obtaining the most treasure and competing with party members.

According to SJG’s announcement on the official Munchkin website, players will have a choice between assuming the role of “Ultramarine, Necron, Aeldari, Ork, Death Guard, or Tyranid” in the anticipated 40k. Hints of the premise suggest that a race to Holy Terra might be on the cards for the release next year.

Gen Con 2018 was a busy weekend for Warhammer 40k fans. As well as the announcement of Munchkin: Warhammer 40k‘s development, miniatures fans will be excited to know that Adeptus Titanicus is on its way to shelves this week, after two and a half years in the making. So, if the dorky board and card games flooding out of the universe are not your style, there’s plenty going on in the here and now to satisfy more traditionalist fans.

Maybe that will salve the burn of waiting all this time for Inquisitor Martyr to show up on consoles. Those that love both the card game and the setting, however, will have a hard time not finding the smile on Kovalic’s face to be downright infectious or looking forward to cutesy renditions of long-beloved character models.
