Henry Cavill has been cast as Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Witcher. Netflix has long been known to have been developing a high-budget series based on The Witcher. Henry Cavill certainly may not be most people’s first choice, but time will tell if he was the right pick as Geralt in The Witcher Netflix series.
IGN broke the news of Henry Cavill’s casting earlier today. The book (and game) series follows Geralt of Rivia, “a solitary monster hunter [who] struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.” Cavill originally told IGN back in August that he would love to play Geralt in the Netflix series. He explained that he is a huge fan of the games and the books.
“The books are amazing… I started reading, and they are well worth a read,”he told the outlet.
While it is yet to be seen how Cavill will portray Geralt, this at least shows that he is familiar with the series. His love for this Polish series could likely make his performance better, which he might need given that he is an unexpected choice for the iconic protagonist.
Aside from Cavill as Geralt, no other casting has yet been announced. There are plenty of key character roles yet to fill. As of writing, there is no release date for The Witcher Netflix series.
Netflix announced its adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books last year. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is set to write and produce the series, along with being the showrunner. She has previously worked on shows such as Marvel’s Daredevil and The Defenders. Joining her will be directors Alik Sakharov, Alex Garcia Lopez and Charlotte Brändström (who have worked on Game of Thrones, Fear the Walking Dead, and Outlander, respectively).
