Hitman 2 Dev IO Interactive Says Future Sequel May Feature ‘Over 20 Locations’

Hitman 2 will feature a total of six new primary story locations, each of which will contain multiple missions for players to complete. Although that’s nothing to scoff at, developer IO Interactive‘s Sven Liebold recently hinted that a future planned sequel might even contain over a whopping 20 locations.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Liebold spoke about what it’s been like since the company went independent and broke off with the previous publisher Square Enix. The company is now afforded more freedom, and that means it won’t have to follow the games-as-a-service model utilized in 2016’s Hitman. Liebold added that going back to serve the players and the community means that there will be future sequels.

“The community means a lot to us, and I think it’s a very big step for the studio as well because this essentially means that maybe there’s a Hitman 3, and a Hitman 4 as well,” he said. “And this will all appear on the same timeline. Meaning that in a couple of years you may be able to play a game that goes to over 20 locations. And that’s super exciting for us.”

Keep in mind that this doesn’t necessarily mean that Hitman 3 will feature 20 new locations. For example, Hitman 2 will feature six new locations, along with remastered versions of all levels from the first game. This increases the number of playable levels in the game without having to create brand new assets, and essentially allows players to experience older levels without having to replay past titles.

Additionally, Liebold also reassured gamers that the developer already has clear plans for the future of the Hitman franchise.

“And Hitman 2016 was the first step, and Hitman 2 is the next step, but we have several plans already thought out,” said Liebold. “We have a clear vision of where we want to take this franchise, and we have ways to keep it relevant. I think that’s super exciting for us because this is like a living, breathing entity, and we just want to keep expanding and expanding and expanding.”
