We already know that Red Dead Redemption 2 will feature a lot of hunting. It’s essentially one of the core gameplay elements of the upcoming sequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption. Now Rockstar Games has confirmed that it will feature over 200 different species of animals, including birds and fish. That means players can probably look forward to a living ecosystem of wildlife in the game.
The official Rockstar Games Twitter account revealed the exciting new piece of information about Red Dead Redemption 2 earlier today. According to the developer, these 200 species of animals, birds, and fish will “behave and respond to their environment in a unique way.” In the tweet, only four specific animals have been revealed. These include a species of coyote, buck, vulture, and eagle, respectively.

We have no idea how many of these 200 animals players will actually be able to hunt. Earlier in May 2018, it was revealed that players will have to hunt different animals for loot and resources, some of which can be contributed to gang’s camp or for their own personal use. Successfully-hunted animals will have to be carried on the player’s horse and cleaner kills will yield better rewards. Animal carcasses will even decay if left unused for too long.
If these 200 animals are anything like the horses in Red Dead Redemption 2, we should expect rich details and authenticity. For example, the horses will have fully-rendered testicles. If that can be done, we’re really excited for the myriad possibilities of unique and crazy animal encounters in the game. This could potentially be one of the most realistic wildlife ecosystems in any game.
In other related news, PlayStation has recently announced several Red Dead Redemption 2 bundles, which will be released on game’s release date next month. Players can already pre-order the bundle of their choice starting today. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018.
