Spider-Man PS4 Is ‘the Iron Man of Marvel Video Games,’ Says Marvel Games Executive Director

In the span of just a few weeks, Spider-Man PS4 has overtaken God of War PS4 as the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive of all time. The massive success enjoyed by the launch debut of Marvel’s Spider-Man has been seen as a sort of return to form for games featuring superheroes. Gamers can perhaps look forward to a future with more Marvel games, as Marvel Games executive editor Bill Rosemann recently referred to Spider-Man PS4 as “the Iron Man of Marvel video games.”

In truth, Rosemann was actually just repeating the words of Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar, who originally said those words in a video interview with Gamespot. In a tweet posted several days ago, Rosemann stated that just like Iron Man kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, Spider-Man PS4 is doing the same for Marvel video games on consoles. He confirms that this is exactly how Marvel Games is treating the incredibly successful game.

All of this could mean the beginning of a new golden age for Marvel games on consoles. We already know that Marvel Games has several other major games in the pipeline, one of which is the currently in development The Avengers Project by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix. There’s also the fact that Marvel gave Insomniac Games its choice of whichever Marvel IP that the developer wanted to adapt, which turned out to be Spider-Man PS4. A Spider-Man sequel is also surely in the works.

Spider-Man PS4 remains on top of the UK game charts three weeks since launch, unfazed by even the highly-anticipated releases of Dragon Quest 11 Echoes of an Elusive Age and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. There’s still more content to come for the game with the first DLC slated to arrive next month. Insomniac Games’ version of Spidey will also officially enter comic book canon later this month in the Spider-Geddon crossover.
