Rare Mortal Kombat 3 Behind-the-Scenes Footage Surfaces

Remember throwing quarter after quarter into Mortal Kombat 3 back in 1995? Now you can get a super rare glimpse of how that revolutionary fighting game was made in a super rare behind-the-scenes video, thanks to NeoGamer and to one of the co-creators of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon.

Boon retweeted the video earlier today which showcases the game’s various actors creating poses and movements for the arcade game. All of the subjects are in full costume for the character they represent giving us a healthy dose of nostalgia and bewilderment.  You can check out the tweet below.

Iconic characters like Jax, Liu Kang, Kano, Kitana, Shao Kahn, and Sonya Blade are featured. In the full video, we can see various clips of the makeup and costuming process, how the actors had to repeat poses for the animations, and some silly fun that the cast and crew have with one another. You can even spot a young Ed Boon hiding in the shadows in some scenes if you look closely enough.

While modern MK games are entirely CG, earlier games were created using a hybrid of real actors and hand-drawn art. MK3 marked the first time the series used pre-rendered graphics for their backgrounds creating a more interactive and realistic experience. MK3 also currently holds the world record for the “largest promotional campaign for a fighting game” according to the 2011 Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.

Mortal Kombat X was the last Mortal Kombat game to be released. Ed Boon and his development studio, NetherRealm Studios, haven’t announced a new game but Boon has been rather active on his Twitter account leading some fans to speculate that a new game might be in the works though nothing has been confirmed.

MKX released in 2015 and MKXL, the full version that included all the DLC, came in 2016.
