A Mega Man Movie Has Been Confirmed

Mega Man 11 launched to massively positive reviews from fans and critics alike this week, and now it has been confirmed that a Mega Man movie is on the way to boot. Fans who were excited for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie now have yet another thing to look forward to next year,

The news comes from a Capcom press release, which explicitly states, “Mega Man to be Adapted into Live-Action Hollywood Film for the First Time!” Details included in the press release are as follows:

The feature film, tentatively titled MEGA MAN, will be written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, and is scheduled to be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Chernin Entertainment, responsible for the Planet of the Apes series, will be producing it with Masi Oka, of Heroes fame.

That’s quite a team. Joost and Schulman are known for the work with the Paranormal Activity franchise, whereas Chernin’s involvement with Planet of the Apes and Oka’s work with Heroes are explicitly stated above. It will be interesting to see what such a diverse pool of talent will bring to the Mega Man movie.

The press release continues:

Based on the influential and globally beloved Mega Man franchise, Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.

Many video games in the past have sought to accomplish the same thing—making a film that appeals to longstanding fans and newcomers alike—and failed. However, given the success of the latest game, it seems likely that Capcom knows what they’re up to. Hopefully the Blue Bomber’s film won’t fall victim to the curse of awful video game movies.
