Rumor: Sony Forming Broadband TV Service

According to a new report, Sony is allegedly putting together its own multi-channel broadband television service and plans to reveal it at this year's CES.

The news comes from Variety, which claims that this new service will likely either come to Sony-branded products like the PlayStation 3 and their Bravia television line, or require a dedicated set-top box. The report goes on to state that Sony is currently in talks with a couple of major content providers in an effort to make this a robust and compelling service.

With the service supposedly being broadband-based, certain region-specific channels may be accessible worldwide. However, launching such a service would be incredibly expensive (we're talking billions of dollars here) and considering Sony's less-than-stellar financial state, it's hard to image how they could pull this off successfully.

Do you think a move like this would be wise for the company? Do we really need another television service? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments below.
