Ubisoft Shutting Down Servers

Ubisoft Stealthily Shuts Down Servers on Legacy Consoles for Multiple Games

Those attempting to play numerous Ubisoft games on older consoles, particularly four Assassin’s Creed games on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, have found Ubisoft shutting down servers for them without much notice. Impacted games include Assassin’s Creed II, III, Brotherhood, and Revelations, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Which games have been affected by Ubisoft shutting down servers?

As reported by TrueAchievements, online services for multiple Ubisoft games have been indefinitely shut down after many users on its forums reported that they were no longer able to earn Xbox Achievements for those games.

While Ubisoft has released a list of games that the publisher doesn’t support anymore, a list that was (at the time of this writing) last updated on April 18, 2022, some members have reported that the servers for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag on Xbox 360 are also down despite the game not being on that list.

It was initially unclear why players had not been able to connect to the online servers for these games, in addition to their respective Uplay accounts. It was suspected that they were merely errors, but upon them notifying Ubisoft of the issue, they received official responses stating that the online servers had indeed been permanently shut down.

As compiled by the site, it seems that, apart from the four Assassin’s Creed games already mentioned above, other Ubisoft games whose online servers have been stealthily shut down include (but may not be limited to) Beyond Good and Evil, Blazing Angels 2, Far Cry 3, Rabbids: Alive and Kicking, and Smurfs 2. While TrueAchievements naturally focuses on the Xbox 360 side of the issue, the online server shutdowns also impact the PS3 and PC versions of those games, where applicable.

The online server shutdowns being silently done is surprising, though, as Ubisoft has been known to notify players, explicitly and clearly, of any games that would be affected by any shutdowns. For example, the publisher announced last year on its forums that servers would be shut down for a host of games (the forum post doesn’t exist anymore, but its existence is preserved on Reddit).

In other news, the 1.12 update for Horizon Forbidden West has fixed a glitch that trapped Aloy in the bathroom in the game’s base, and the Nintendo Switch Online trial for Dragon Quest Builders 2 is running now.
