Command and Conquer Remaster

EA Is Exploring Remastering the Command and Conquer Games

One of the bigger announcements out of this year’s EA Play event was the return of Command and Conquer. Unfortunately, the jubilation of longtime fans turned sour quickly. Rivals, the mobile game, wasn’t exactly what many fans wanted to see from the strategy franchise on the eve of its 25th anniversary. It seems like some folks at EA recognized that as well. The news straight from EA is that plans are already in motion for a set of C&C remasters on PC.

In a post on Reddit, Electronic Arts producer Jim Vessella spoke directly to the community.

“Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command and Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC,” he said.

He went on to talk about his history with the franchise, producing Red Alert 3 and taking the lead on Kane’s Wrath. He revealed that EA is currently looking to remaster classic entries of the series on PC.

While the franchise’s 25th anniversary isn’t until 2020, Jim expressed that he wants the community involved throughout the process.

“We are eager to hear your feedback to help influence our current thoughts for PC and what comes next. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be talking to fans in a variety of ways,” he continued.

The rest of the comments are filled with Jim responding to fans about UI changes and balance updates. Most notably, he was quick to answer that the new editions will not have microtransactions of any kind.

Work on these remasters is just beginning. With any luck, they should arrive just in time to mark the franchise’s 25th anniversary in 2020. This new effort follows several other attempts to get Command and Conquer back on its feet.

Command and Conquer: Generals 2 was in development by Victory Games. A direct sequel to 2003’s Generals, the game went through a free-to-play conversion behind the scenes over time. Ultimately, the game and the studio both faced the axe in October of 2013.

Command and Conquer: Rivals is currently in a closed testing state on iOS and Android. You can sign up to play in the pre-alpha on EA’s official site.
