Rocket League RocketID delayed

Rocket League RocketID Delayed to 2019

Psyonix has remained steadfast in its commitment to deliver quality cross-platform play since Rocket League’s launch on major consoles, with PlayStation 4 players being the only exception. That seemingly changed with last month’s announcement that Sony would allow cross-platform play for certain games in the future. Now, Psyonix is putting its next cross-platform development, the Rocket League RocketID, on hold until 2019 in an effort to incorporate PlayStation 4 players into its offerings.

While our goal was to release RocketID before the end of 2018, we’ve made the difficult decision to push its release into early 2019,” the studio said in a statement published on the game’s website.

RocketID’s implementation will allow players to form parties across multiple platforms rather than just allowing them to play with one another in-game.

While Sony’s reversal on cross-platform play only confirmed platform interactivity for just Fortnite, the common belief is that the feature will be implemented for other popular online multiplayer titles. That is a category that Rocket League falls squarely within. The game still regularly draws over 100,000 concurrent players daily and has had over 50 million total players.

Still, Psyonix has not received confirmation that their rocket-driven evolution of sports games will get the green light for PS4 cross-platform integration. Despite this doubt, the studio believes that incorporating its PS4 audience is the right move.

“The good news is that with Sony’s recent announcements regarding full cross-platform functionality, we can now make additional changes to prepare RocketID for ALL platforms should we receive permission to do so,” the studio said.

For now, Psyonix is asking for patience while they secure approval from Sony and build yet another tool that could sustain Rocket League’s multiplatform success.

“We know the wait has been frustrating for many of you who are eager for this feature, and we thank you for your patience as we continue to work on cross-platform party support.”
