In a Hollywood press conference today, Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants announced a new video game called Disney Infinity, which will combine the worlds of Pixar and Disney in a sandbox game featuring real, plastic toys. You know… not unlike Activision's quite popular Skylanders. It is currently slated for June, and will initially release on console, branching out to mobile and online later.
"Disney Infinity is not a single game," Pleasants emphasized. Each action figure has its own storyline for players to unravel. These characters can play together, in existing games that Disney has created, or in player-created worlds, something Disney has called "the Toy Box." At launch, Disney Infinity will initially have 17 character figures and 40 collectible interactive pieces that will enable players to customize their gaming experience in their Toy Box.
To integrate the collectibles with the game, players will use the Infinity base connected to their console. Players can also place Power Discs on the Infinity base to power up characters with new powers, toys, and customizations.
"Who would win a race between Lightning McQueen or Dash?" Pleasants asked during the press conference, "Who would win a sword fight between Jack Sparrow and Phineas Flynn? This is the promise and magic of Disney Infinity. It's up to you to unlock the heart and soul of Disney Infinity."
Before anyone asks, all of modes in Disney Infinity will feature a multiplayer component, so with the Toy Box mode, there is literally an infinite number of combinations and worlds the players can create by joining forces.
Upon the June launch, Disney Infinity will have three play sets available based on The Incredibles, Pirates of the Carribbean, and Monsters University (Pixar movie to release in 2013).

Despite the similarity to Skylanders, are you excited for Disney Infinity? I know I'm going to have to keep this a secret from my kiddo as long as possible.
