Red Dead Redemption 2 Sales Topple Black Ops 4 in Japan

Red Dead Redemption 2 sales have managed to topple reigning champion Call of Duty Black Ops 4 in Japan. After topping the Japanese game charts for two consecutive weeks, Rockstar Games‘ blockbuster hit has claimed the throne. Other new releases last week include Street Fighter 30th Anniversary CollectionBeyblade Burst: Battle Zero, and Yomawari: The Long Night Collection.

According to the most recent Media Create Sales figures, Red Dead Redemption 2 sales amounted to 132,984 units sold in its opening week. The prequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption managed to top the charts in the UK as well, with its launch week sales double that of the first game. Impressively, it also broke the record for the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history.

Meanwhile, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection debuted at fourth and sixth place for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch version, respectively. The remaining two new releases, Beyblade Burst: Battle Zero, and Yomawari: The Long Night Collection, are both Nintendo Switch exclusives, debuting at the respective positions of number 11 and 17.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 dropped to second place with 57,567 units sold while Super Mario Party grabbed third place with 31,650 units. Bandai Namco’s Soul Calibur 6 fell all the way from third place to number 10 this week, selling only 5,413 in its second week. Other games in the top ten include Minecraft Nintendo Switch EditionMario Kart 8 DeluxeSplatoon 2, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

As usual, the Japanese hardware sales chart remains similar week by week. The Nintendo Switch continues to outsell the PS4 at a ratio of two to one, which probably means that perhaps its time for the next generation of consoles to begin in the near future. The Xbox family of consoles also retain their positions at the bottom of the chart. Microsoft’s consoles have always been less popular in Japan compared to those by Sony or Nintendo.
