The SMITE Switch version has finally been confirmed. Rumors and datamining had suggested the possibility of Hi-Rez Studios’ mythical MOBA making its way to Nintendo’s hybrid console, but we hadn’t yet received any official word on the matter — until today.
SMITE is a MOBA that’s played from a third-person perspective. It features a large cast of characters who are all based on legendary figures from the world’s many different religions, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. The game first debuted in March 2014 and later made its way to the Xbox One the following year and the PS4 the year after that. Now Hi-Rez Studios is rounding out the console trifecta with the announcement of a SMITE Switch version. What’s more, the game will be sold as a digital bundle on the Nintendo Switch.
Although SMITE had previously been a free-to-play game, the Nintendo Switch version is being sold as a premium bundle for around $29.99. The bundle will include 600 Gems and the SMITE Founder’s Pack. The Founder’s Pack includes Thor, Zeus, Neith, and several other heroes. A similar setup happened with Paladins, another Hi-Rez title that received a Nintendo Switch port.
Players might not be too keen on paying for the SMITE Switch port since it’s a free-to-play game. Thankfully, we can look to how the Paladins release played out as a possible guideline for the future of SMITE. While the initial release was strictly a paid affair, the game was eventually made available as a free-to-play title, just like it is on other platforms. While other consoles do permit free-to-play titles on their platform right from the get-go, it seems like Nintendo has a penchant for a short period of paid exclusivity, at least at launch.
If you haven’t had the chance to play SMITE, you won’t have to wait very long to get some godly battles going on. SMITE is set to release on November 16, 2018.
