Microsoft Briefly Surpasses Apple to Become Most Valuable Company in the US

Microsoft and Apple have been duking it out for years over their computer services and other technological innovations they’ve produced in the last few decades. But one company, at this moment in time, can claim they’re worth just a bit more than the other, as Microsoft briefly surpassed Apple to become the most valuable company in the United States.

According to Business Insider, Microsoft inched ahead of Apple yesterday to become the most valuable company in the U.S., with a market capitalization of $814 billion. Apple did climb back ahead by the end of the day with a value around $828.64 billion. As of this writing, the market cap for Microsoft is around $791 billion while Apple is around $817 billion. This is the first time that Microsoft’s market cap has matched Apple’s since the start of their rise back in 2010.

Momentum has been on Microsoft’s side since September, when it posted some pretty good quarter earnings results due to their success with strong PC sales and its burgeoning cloud services. Meanwhile, Apple’s valuation has fallen over 20 percent since its own earning results, which didn’t look all that hot.

This is a bit of a downturn for Apple, with its share price increasingly dropping in recent months. It was not too long ago that Apple became the first ever company valued at over one trillion dollars, hitting a stock price of $207.05. They fell under that number earlier this month. Microsoft’s current shares are around $106.25, while Apple still outpaces Microsoft in this area at $172.93.

Some other companies that are considered worth the most include Amazon, Google parent company Alphabet, conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, Facebook, JP Morgan Chase, and Johnson and Johnson. Tencent and Alibaba Group are also considered some of the most valuable companies, though they are based in China.

Of course, Xbox falls under the Microsoft banner. Future plans for the next generation of consoles are being worked on under the codename Scarlett and possibly a disc-free Xbox One.
