PUBG Mobile Wins Android Game of the Year

Google’s Android app awards saw PUBG Mobile win a handful of trophies. The awards were given out to a host of apps, though there was a specific focus on gaming apps for Android users. Awards also went out for the best indie, casual, and competitive games.

It was Tencent’s PUBG Mobile that cleaned up in awards though. The portable battle royale game managed to take home the Game of the Year award for Android and sat among five games deemed winners in the Most Competitive category. The awards come just after PUBG Mobile managed to beat Fortnite Mobile for daily revenue in November. Capcom also tweeted a teaser of an upcoming crossover between the Resident Evil 2 Remake and PUBG Mobile that looks set to shake the game up a bit.

PUBG was joined in the Most Competitive lineup by Badland Brawl, Dragonball Legends, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Asphalt 9, and Realm War. Meanwhile, five titles were picked as Google’s Best Indie Games, with Reigns: Game of Thrones joined by Evoland 2 and others. It was a good haul for casual games as well, with Candy Crush Friends Saga and The Sims Mobile picking awards up for replay value.

Google’s nominations for Android apps were a sharp contrast to the titles that made appearances in Apple’s gaming awards, which saw puzzle games leading the charge ahead of both PUBG and Fortnite‘s mobile versions.

It’s been a year that’s seen mobile gaming really come into its own. While people still enjoy the likes of Candy Crush and similar arcade games, we’ve seen a surge of household names make their way to the mobile platform recently, and that phenomenon has been followed by a wave of experimental indie games that have opened up a whole new side of mobile gaming. With reports suggesting that video games are expected to account for 76% of mobile revenue in 2018, it seems that the platform is growing rapidly.
