There’s no shame in putting down your controller and tapping out. Sometimes it’s because a game is too difficult, while other times you just don’t have the heart to keep pressing on. We’ve all been there, so we asked our editors which games have proven to be their Everest.
But what game have you never been able to complete? Leave your answer in the comments section below, and as always, we’ll feature our favorite response in tomorrow’s Tell GR!
Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “I’m pretty much the opposite of a completionist. If a game loses its grip on my (admittedly short) attention span, I have no qualms with dropping it and moving on to something else. With that being said, Dark Souls has always been one of those games that I love, but I know I’ll probably never complete. I’ve picked it up on multiple platforms now, and I always wind up making steady progress before getting frustrated and then playing something more easy-going. I’m the worst kind of person, I know.”
Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I’ve never gotten around to beating a Kingdom Hearts game. I’ve had every intention of doing so since the first one came out. I own multiple physical copies of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 spanning three consoles, but I just cannot find the time to do it. I have 1.5 and 2.5 Final Mix installed on my PS4 right now, but as time ticks closer to the release of Kingdom Hearts 3, I’m just finding myself having to make peace with the fact that there’s no way I can play the first two core games before it comes out.
Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “I’ve restarted The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a good four or five times since buying the Nintendo Switch at launch. Don’t get me wrong, I think the game is amazing, but IRL events caused me to constantly stop playing for months at a time. When I came back to the game, I’d forgotten what was going on and felt compelled to restart to do it justice. My latest playthrough, in which I’ve completed two of four bosses, has been put on hold for Red Dead Redemption 2.”
Bradley Russell, news editor: “After slowly but surely making my way through Celeste thanks to Games with Gold, I’ve been wistfully thinking back about a similar game: Super Meat Boy. I just… couldn’t do it. Now, I’m not exactly the type to git gud and grind my way through a game, granted, but I also have a pretty high threshold when it comes to giving up a game entirely. SMB just broke me though. Maybe I’ll pick it up one day but, for now, I’m more than okay with trying to scale Celeste‘s peaks as it’s far more forgiving and, dare I say it, fun because of it.”
Michael Leri, features editor: “No need to humblebrag over something no one gives a crap about but I’m usually pretty good at finishing games. My completionist obsession almost always compels me to see the end of something. However, I can see a white whale forming with Red Dead Redemption 2. I thought I’d dive in during the break but all I did was move it off my hard drive to play other things I actually want to play instead like Netflix or scrolling through my screenshots.”
