LG Unveils New HDMI 2.1 TVs with 8K Resolution Support

LG has unveiled its new lineup of TVs for 2019. The new lineup includes several models with HDMI 2.1 and 8K resolution support. The year’s OLED and LCD televisions also support higher frame rate video inputs, variable refresh rate, and more.

The new 88-inch Z9 OLED and SM99 8K LCD TVs are the two new 8K sets coming from the South Korean electronics maker. The company revealed the new TVs ahead of next week’s CES 2019 exposition, where competition will likely showcase other 8K TVs. HDMI 2.1 ports will be included on all 2019 OLED TVs and selected “NanoCell” TVs. HDMI 2.1 supports up to 10K resolutions, 120fps inputs, enhanced audio return channel (eARC), variable refresh rates, and an automatic low-latency mode. These TVs also come with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. No pricing has been unveiled for the new 8K sets.

LG’s new Alpha 9 processor includes ThinQ AI, a new system that will automatically adjust brightness and audio based on content and environment. Along with the two 8K TV’s, LG has announced six ranges of other TVs. The OLED Z9, W9, E9 and C9 and the LCD SM9X and SM8X. LG’s support of HDMI 2.1 gives their televisions an edge over Samsung’s 8K set, as the new HDMI standard supports 8K at 60fps. Samsung’s TV uses HDMI 2.0, which only supports 8K at up to 30fps.

HDMI 2.1 is the latest in the range of HDMI standards with a lot more bandwidth and new features being supported. While the connector itself isn’t changing, new cables might be necessary to get the full advantage of the new standard. Things like variable refresh rates, 10K resolution, and higher (120fps) frame rates necessitate the new standard, as it increases data bandwidth between devices. Dynamic HDR, higher bitrate audio (Dolby Atmos), and other unique features are supported through the newer HDMI standards.

Expect more information regarding LG’s new TV sets be revealed in CES 2019, which runs from January 8 to January 11.
