Song of Memories Switch release canceled, development woes to blame

There’s some unfortunate news for Switch fans looking to play Song of Memories. While the game is still planned for release in the UK and North America on the PlayStation 4 next month, the Switch version has been canceled.

Publisher PQube Games made the announcement on Wednesday, citing development issues as the reason for the cancellation.

“Today, PQube announces the release date of the romantic visual novel Song of Memories on PlayStation 4,” the official press release (via Rice Digital) said. “The love story that turned the Japanese genre upside down with its surprising twist releases worldwide on February 1st. While the PlayStation 4 version and the special Encore Edition are confirmed, we regrettably had to cancel the Nintendo Switch version of the game.”

“Unfortunately, Song of Memories can’t be brought to a functioning level of quality our fans demand on the Switch due to development complications,” they continued.

Rice Digital has said those who have pre-ordered the Switch version will be getting an email shortly regarding the cancellation. They’ll also receive details on how to switch to the PS4 version if desired.

Song of Memories plays like any other romantic visual novel from Japan: you are a protagonist at a new school that develops relationships with a number of students until a virus starts destroying their everyday lives. And like some of those games, the sexual innuendo is rampant. Omega Labyrinth Z is another PQube published title that was ultimately cancelled for western release, although it wasn’t due to development problems: It was because of a new Sony policy that is more aggressive towards censoring content for release in the west.

Sony’s new policy has affected other games as well. Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal’s intimacy mode was removed from the western release of the game when it was previously present in other Senran Kagura titles.

Song of Memories has already been released on Steam. It will be made available for the PlayStation 4 on February 1.
