I never thought Just Dance could be a motion picture, but that’s why I don’t work in Hollywood. Sony’s Screen Gems has bought the movie rights to the Just Dance franchise, and work is already underway for on the Just Dance movie script.
There’s no release date for the proposed movie, but work is underway. Deadline, who reported the move, reports that multiple studios were bidding for the rights deal, with Screen Gems walking away the winner. Ubisoft Film and Television, along with Olive Bridge Entertainment will produce the film, with Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin (Ubisoft) and Jodi Hildebrand and Will Gluck (Olive Branch) in charge.
According to the report, head of Sony Kenichiro Yoshida is interested in properties that can be exploited across multiple platforms. That does fit Just Dance to a tee, as the popular dance series does extremely well on Sony’s PlayStation platforms, not to mention Sony’s artists that could be featured in either a potential new game or film.
A Just Dance movie is the latest video game series to be hitting television and movie screens. A new Witcher television series is in development for Netflix, with Henry Cavill starring. A Castlevania animated series is already on the platform.
Sonic the Hedgehog is also hitting the big screen. Last month, the first images of the upcoming movie were shown, with Sonic himself sporting a brand new look, supporting a more buff body. Internet reactions, obviously, did not take kindly to the new look, causing one of the movie’s writers to tell people to relax.
Just Dance, which is celebrating its ten year anniversary, is enormously popular, with over 120 million players worldwide. It is also one the few titles that’s still being released on older platforms. The latest game in the series, Just Dance 2019, came out back on October 5 for not only the Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but also its predecessors. Hell, it’s still coming out on the Wii.
