Ubisoft: “It Wouldn’t Be Surprising To See A Female Assassin Coming Up In A Mainline Assassin’s Creed”

So Assassin's Creed IV has been announced (check out our preview here), and surprise, surprise, another male protagonist is the star of the show.

When asked by IGN why all of the main characters in Assassin's Creed are men (sorry, but Liberation doesn't count), Black Flag director, Ashraf Ismail, explained:

Really early on, we decided to tell the story of the Kenways. So we already had in place the idea to tell Edward, Haytham, and Connor. This was actually years ago, we had this, [so] we actually never thought, 'could this be a woman?'

From the pirate perspective, there were a few famous women pirates. But it wasn't common. So we didn't want that element to be a detail people got stuck on.

But that doesn't mean we won't see a female lead sometime in the future. "I would say it wouldn't be surprising to see a female assassin coming up in a mainline Assassin's Creed," he added. "But for us, for AC4, it was always Edward."
