Next Xbox “Not Strictly About Games,” According To Jonathan Blow

Jonathan Blow, the mind behind Braid as well as the upcoming first-person puzzler The Witness, isn't a huge fan of Microsoft's next-gen plans, claiming that the Xbox 720 is "not strictly about games."

In an interview with Edge Online, Blow explained:

To me they talk about a console that is not strictly about games. It’s trying to be the center of the living room device, which is fine and maybe it’s the right thing for Microsoft to do, business-wise. I don’t know; I actually don’t think it is, but they’ve certainly thought about it more than me! As a place to put the best, highest performing version of our game on, it doesn’t seem as good a choice.

If you own an Xbox 360, or at the very least are relatively informed on the happenings within the industry, this statement shouldn't come as a major shock to you. If you pull up the current Xbox dashboard, it's clear that the guys at Microsoft have a whole lot more on their mind than just games when considering the future of the platform.

What is striking, however, is that this has resulted in an timed exclusivity deal between Sony and one of gaming's most forward-thinking indie developers. Might we see other studios follow suit? Could the PS4 be the go-to platform for third-party games? We'll just have to wait and see.
