While we've heard (and seen) a lot about Star Wars: Battlefront III, the project is well beyond the point of resuscitation and LucasArts, the developer and publisher of licensed Star Wars games over the years, knows it. That's why the studio began development of Star Wars: First Assault, previously referred to in rumors as Star Wars: Trigger. They thought the best way to capitalize on demand for Battlefront III would be to release a downloadable 8-vs-8 shooter instead.
At least that's what sources speaking with Kotaku suggest. These sources are unnamed, but the details seem to fall in line with what we've heard in the past about LucasArts coming to terms with the IP sale to Disney. Apparently the studio was supposed to launch First Assault this Spring, but with the change in overhead, things have been put on hold indefinitely.
Until LucasArts reveals the game or says otherwise, we'll have to look fondly on what might have been. Maybe if there's enough excitement around the possibility of a Battlefront III, there can still be a First Assault.
