Samsung’s new Galaxy Fold phone will cost $2,000

Samsung first teased its new foldable phone back in November 2018 but today at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked showcase event, the new technology was formally revealed to the world. Samsung unveiled release information for the new phone the Galaxy Fold as well as pricing and details on several other upcoming pieces of hardware including a new line of the popular Galaxy S series to be released later this year.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be released to the U.S. on April 26 at a starting price of $1,980, which is the most expensive entry into the premium phone market to date. The phone will come in two variants, an LTE and 5G model, and features new screen technology called the Infinity Flex Display. This new display is built to withstand constant folding, which will combine with the model’s several interlocking hinge gears to ensure a stable device.

The core concept of the phone is in its title, the ability to fold out into something of a tablet-sized device. When the Galaxy Fold is unfolded, it reaches a screen size of 7.3 inches, while the standard single screen experience is 4.6 inches. The device features two separate batteries — one to power each screen — and will come with a staggering 12 GB of RAM as well as a Qualcomm 7nm octa-core processor.

This extra processing power along with the screen size allows for up to three apps to run at once when the phone is unfolded. The Galaxy Fold also comes equipped with six cameras, the rear-facing wide lens camera is a powerful 16-megapixel while the inward facing selfie camera captures your face at a lovely 12. The Fold will come in four colors, Cosmo Black, Martian Green, Astro Blue, and Space Silver.

Alongside the Galaxy Fold, Samsung also unveiled the upcoming Galaxy S10 series which will launch with a variety of models including the now to be expected Plus sized variant. You can pre-order the S10 right now or pre-register for the Galaxy Fold release.
