PlayerUnknown steps down as PUBG Lead Designer to work on special projects

The first big battle royale game is up for a change as PlayerUnknown steps down from his role as the Lead Designer for PlayerUnknown’s BattlegroundsBrendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene had first brought PUBG to the world back in 2017 after working on the project for several years. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the developers and fans alike with new maps, new weapons, and expansions to both consoles and mobile devices. Now, Mr. Greene has decided to hand off the Lead Designer role for PUBG to someone else so he can move on to work on other projects.

“The past five years of my life has been all about battle royale,” Greene said in a statement as reported by Eurogamer. “From the early days working on a mod to getting the chance to create my vision for a battle royale title, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.”

Who will take command of the PUBG team after PlayerUnknown steps down? That honor will go to Taeseok Jang, a man who previously served as Art Director for the battle royale game. Mr. Jang will be heading up the team responsible for one of the world’s most popular games and he certainly has no easy task ahead of him. After all, Fortnite and Apex Legends are providing stiff competition and competition from the next big thing can pop up at any time.

As PlayerUnknown steps down from a role he’s held for half a decade, Mr. Greene is optimistic about his future. He plans to lead a new division at PUBG Corp. called PUBG Special Projects which will primarily focus on research and game development. PlayerUnknown will remain a Consulting Creative Director for PUBG for the foreseeable future.

“We are tasked with exploring, experimenting, and creating new technologies, tools, pipelines, and gameplay; but for me, it is more than that,” Mr. Greene said regarding his new gig. “Together with a team of game developers and researchers, we will explore new possibilities of interaction and connection within the game space.”
